Your donation will be used to reach people in urgent need in the aftermath of the earthquakes. It will provide support and aid that includes:
- Distributing essentials like food water and blankets
- Setting up temporary shelters to support thousands of survivors who are facing freezing conditions
- Providing first aid and crisis support
- Assisting with the rescue efforts and getting people vital medical aid
- Providing psychosocial support to those who have been traumatised
Turkey is in a seismically active region and experiences earthquakes frequently. The most destructive earthquakes in recent history have occurred in the eastern part of the country, particularly in the cities of Istanbul and Izmit. This recent quake which measured 7.5 has caused considerable damage and cost over 14000 lives. Centred in Gaziantep a city in southeast Turkey. It is the sixth largest city in the country and the largest in the southeastern Anatolia region.
Gaziantep is known for its rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine, and its history dating back to the Hittite empire. It is also a centre of industry and trade, producing textiles, leather goods, and other products.

The FCO today issued guidance on travel to turkey. It said: “A 7.8 earthquake hit Gaziantep and nine other Turkish provinces (Hatay, Osmaniye, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Adana, Malatya) in the southeast of Turkey on 6 February 2023. There have been several strong after-shocks, and the Turkish government has announced its highest level of state emergency. You should avoid the Southeast region of Turkey and follow the advice of the local authorities.”
