Nestled on a picturesque 600-acre peninsula between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne, Lough Erne Resort
Nestled on a picturesque 600-acre peninsula between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne, Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen is a mesmerising blend of old-world charm and modern luxury. Recognised as Northern Ireland’s first AA and NITB Five-Star Hotel, this resort promises a unique experience combining stunning natural landscapes, world-class amenities and breathtaking food.
This was the best meal I have had in over 25 years.
As guests step into this enchanting retreat, they are greeted with meticulously manicured grounds and breathtaking views that set the stage for an unforgettable stay in what can comfortably be described as one of Ireland’s finest hotels. With 120 luxury rooms and suites, this beautiful hotel offers a serene haven bathed in natural light, providing the ultimate countryside escape.
I arrived for my one night in heaven in early November; as guests approach, they are greeted by a grand driveway, flanked by lush, manicured gardens and the serene backdrop of the lake, creating a breathtaking first impression.
The entrance is elegant, characterised by its classic architectural design that seamlessly blends the traditional charm of the Irish countryside with sophisticated details. As you enter the hotel, you are greeted with wood-panelled walls and a roaring open fire.
Stepping inside, the decor exudes a harmonious blend of luxury and comfort. The interiors of Lough Erne Resort boast a tasteful combination of rich, warm colours and sumptuous fabrics, creating an inviting, cosy atmosphere.
Beautifully crafted woodwork and plush furnishings adorn the public spaces, while exquisite artwork and subtle lighting add a touch of elegance. The decor reflects the area’s heritage, paying homage to the natural beauty and cultural richness surrounding the resort.
This enchanting ambience sets the stage for a memorable stay, where luxury and tranquillity go hand in hand.
Guest check-in is to the left, and it’s a seamless procedure that allows guests to be expertly instructed on the layout and amenities of this beautiful hotel. Pat takes care of your bags, and as if by magic, they appear in your room before you do. My room was a lakeside double.
These beautifully spacious rooms channel the serenity of the stunning lakeside location to create a peaceful hideaway. My room was magnificent, complete with luxury touches and incredible views.
It featured:
- King-size bed
- Freestanding claw-foot bath
- Rainfall shower
- Luxury Voya toiletries
- Flatscreen TV
- Tea and coffee-making facilities
- Egyptian cotton bedding
- Safety deposit box
To help make your stay as relaxing as possible, complimentary robes and slippers await in your room, luxury bath products, and a freestanding bathtub to soak in.
As evening falls, you can return to your king-size bed surrounded by beautiful Irish textiles.
The standard of housekeeping in a hotel is an excellent indicator of how good your stay is going to be. In my case, it was superb. The room was spotless. After a refreshing walk on the stunning grounds, I decided that a lovely Irish coffee was just what I wanted, so I went off to the Blaney Bar. I went with its cosy sink-into seating and warm lighting, the Blaney Bar offers good old-fashioned Irish hospitality with a modern twist, right in the heart of the resort. I could sit looking out across Lough Erne as the sun set, pure bliss. If you don’t want a formal dining experience, the Blaney is the spot for you.
Paying tribute to centuries of Irish cooking, each of their dishes is made using locally sourced produce from trusted suppliers.
From delicate, whiskey-cured salmon to hearty stews and soups, the Executive Chef, Stephen Holland, uses recipes passed down from his grandmother, celebrating a culture of good eating.
Relax and savour the views of the Fermanagh Lakelands with a beer or one of the hotel’s many Irish whiskies, including a selection from neighbouring distilleries. Or ask their expert bartenders to create a bespoke cocktail and sample something different. My Irish coffee hit the spot.
Dinner
Dinner was in the Catalina Restaurant; culinary delights await at the resort’s three AA Rosette dining venues, where Executive Chef Stephen Holland crafts exquisite menus showcasing local Flavors.
From the fine dining experience at Catalina Restaurant to the relaxed ambiance of The Blaney Bar, each meal celebrates Ireland’s rich culinary heritage. I was pushing the boat out a little as I opted for the 5-course dinner menu at £70-00, well, it was my birthday.
I opened my culinary journey with a Bluebell Farm Goats Cheese & Chive Pastry Bun, followed by a starter of Slow Cooked Duck & Pistachio Terrine – Caramelized Walnut – Redcurrant Jelly – Pistachio Financer. The appetiser and starter were fantastic, I then progressed to the main course which was Mill Dam Flax Fed Irish Beef Seared Fillet – Baked Artichoke – Truffle Mushroom Duxelles.
Oh, my goodness. The fillet was super tender and melt-in-the-mouth. How the Chef managed to get a fillet to taste so well is a mystery to me. I then had a delightful Chocolate and salted Caramel Dessert—Dulse & Yellowman Ice Cream. Oh, my goodness. I was in heaven.
I can honestly say that in twenty-five years of visiting hotels, I have never had such a good meal. The Catalina is a celebration of all things local. The Chef has curated a collection of trusted local suppliers to ensure that our menu changes with the seasons, reflecting both rich Irish flavours and their heritage.
As passionate ambassadors for local produce, the culinary team at Lugh Erne Resort believe that simplicity is often the key to creating cuisine that really showcases indigenous ingredients. And it goes to show that the smaller the distance from farm to fork the more beautiful the taste on the plate.
The Catalina restaurant is the place to dine at Lough Erne Resort because from swans taking flight to starlit nights overlooking the ever-changing lough, who knows what you may see from the glorious dining room?
