OPW Heritage Card: Unlimited Access to Ireland’s Historic Sites for One Year

Planning an Ireland trip and want to focus more on the experiences—and less on buying tickets at every stop? The OPW Heritage Card from Heritage Ireland is designed for visitors seeking free, unlimited admission to many of Ireland’s best-known historic attractions for one full year.

For NI travellers especially, the OPW Heritage Card can be a smart way to plan a multi-stop itinerary across weekends, school holidays, or longer trips—helping you explore at your own pace without budgeting for individual entry fees each time.

What is the OPW Heritage Card?

The OPW Heritage Card is an exclusive card that allows visitors to explore OPW heritage sites with unlimited access for the duration of its validity. Heritage Ireland states that the card provides free, unlimited admission to state-managed OPW Heritage Sites throughout Ireland.

Because it covers repeat visits and additional stops, the card suits people who enjoy collecting highlights from across the country—whether that’s a famous landmark castle one day and a major abbey or cathedral on another.

How long is the card valid?

The OPW Heritage Card is valid for one year from first use. That’s important for planning: you can buy the card in advance, then start using it when you’re ready. The card only becomes valid on first use, so it won’t “run down” while you’re waiting for your travel dates.

Unlimited Access to Ireland’s Historic Sites for One YearOPW Heritage Card costs (one-year pricing)

The OPW Heritage Card offers different price options depending on who is travelling. One-year card prices are:

  1. Adult: €40.00
  2. Senior (aged 60 years or over): €30.00
  3. Student (with valid student ID): €10.00
  4. Child (aged 12 to 18): €10.00
    • Children under 12 have free admission
  5. Family (2 adults and up to 5 children aged 12 to 18): €90.00

If your trip includes several large attractions, the OPW Heritage Card can offer strong value compared with paying for each entry separately.

OPW Heritage Card: Unlimited Access to Ireland’s Historic Sites for One YearWhere to buy the OPW Heritage Card—and delivery times

You can purchase the OPW Heritage Card in two ways:

  1. Online (recommended for planning), via:
    https://heritagecards.admit-one.eu/
  2. On arrival at OPW fee-paying heritage sites

For online orders, the card is posted to your chosen postal address worldwide. Heritage Ireland advises customers to allow sufficient time for delivery. Cards are typically dispatched within 10 working days from the date of purchase.

For non-EU destinations, delivery may require customs clearance and possible customs charges, which could need to be paid by the recipient in advance where applicable.

Can you book tours in advance with the OPW Heritage Card?

Yes. Heritage Ireland notes that before you receive your OPW Heritage Card in the post—or before purchasing at your first fee-paying site visited—tours can be booked in advance. This is done by selecting the “OPW One Year Heritage Card” option in relevant online booking facilities.

This is useful for travellers who want timed guided tours at major sites and prefer to organise their schedule in advance.

Important practical notes before you go

While the OPW Heritage Card offers outstanding access, there are a few key limitations travellers should be aware of:

OPW Heritage Card: Unlimited Access to Ireland’s Historic Sites for One Year 2

  1. Busy sites (no guaranteed admission):
Some OPW heritage sites can be extremely busy, particularly in high season. The OPW Heritage Card does not guarantee admission when a site is at capacity.
  2. No fast-track entrance:
The card does not provide fast-track entry.
  3. Parking and ancillary services:
The card covers tour admissions, but some services—such as parking—may be provided by other bodies and may involve additional charges. Cardholders are not automatically exempt from those fees.

Keeping these points in mind will help ensure your day trips run smoothly, especially during peak summer periods.

Why the OPW Heritage Card is popular with NI travellers

The OPW Heritage Card is particularly appealing if your Ireland break includes multiple OPW attractions such as castles, abbeys, cathedrals and other major historic sites. Instead of deciding ticket by ticket, you can focus on building an itinerary around what you want to see next.

It’s also a great option for:

  1. travellers who want flexibility across several locations,
  2. families planning a full itinerary,
  3. history lovers who enjoy returning to favourite sites.

And because the card can be delivered to addresses, it also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves Irish heritage.

Dissability Toll Exemption Scheme
FREE TOLLS NORTHERN DIABBLED DRIVERS

If you are a Disabled Driver, consider using the DTS in the Republic.

The Disability Toll Exemption Scheme was set up by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in 2019 to exempt Disability Modified Vehicles from tolling charges on Irish toll roads.

From February 2020, a registered disability modified vehicle will not be liable to pay toll charges at any toll plaza on Irish toll roads.

Eligibility for the scheme is determined by the motorist having a certified disability-modified vehicle or being taxed as a disabled vehicle

DTES have confirmed to Disability Action NI  that “Vehicles from Northern Ireland can have the toll exemption applied to them. Once the car has been modified/adapted and a copy of a letter showing this is provided, DANI can register the car for the DTES exemption disc. Otherwise, a tax cert showing that the car is for a disabled driver/passenger can be provided instead.”
