Budapest, Hungary
from mid-November to January, Budapest exudes a Christmas-fairytale-atmosphere with multiple festive experiences on offer, including the famous Basilica Christmas Market hosted in St. Stephen’s Square. The vibrant public plaza becomes a focal point thanks to the spectacular 12-metre Christmas tree, light projections as well as quality craft and food stalls. Meanwhile, for those looking for a more peaceful setting, the quieter Buda Castle Christmas Market offers picturesque panoramic views thanks to its high above the rooftops setting. Weekends here bring free openair concerts to dial up the festive tone and Advent Fair by Matthias Church provides a cosier Christmas Market option but with picture postcard vibes. As the city’s oldest and most established market, the Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square is also worth a visit, alongside nearby Varoshaza Park, home to a festive skating rink.
For visitors looking to take in as much of the Christmas festivities as possible, the city offers a 3-hour Christmas Walking Tour to stroll through all of the key sites and highlights in one winter walk. Indulging in traditional Hungarian treats including kürtőskalács (chimney cakes), lángos (fried flat breads), Goulash soup and spiced mulled wine is also a Budapest-must at Christmas.

European Christmas Markets pack on the charm but Tallinn’s boast is that it was home to the first-ever displayed Christmas tree (since 1441) – a tradition that still continues to this day within the Town Hall Square, with the ‘star’ 14-metre tree taking centre stage. This year, the Christmas Market will celebrate its 25th anniversary as well as a new lighting display. All the usual fairytale favourites will be there once again, including cosy cuisine and craft stalls by local artisans, and traditional Estonian Christmas festive flavours such as gingerbread, reindeer sausages(!) and hot glögi, mulled wine with a dash of Vana Tallinn liqueur. Set to open on 21 November when the Christmas tree will be lit, and a jazz band will start the festive concert celebrations, also for the first time in 2026 the adventure company 360 KRAADI will be present offering adventurous city tours in the Old Town. As per tradition, the stage at the Tallinn Christmas Market will offer a colourful cultural programme each weekend, including hosting long-time favourites, the children’s choir Ellerhein and Inger together with Free Flow dancers.

As a pretty winter destination, Krakow shines at this time of year thanks to its scent-filled timber market stalls, brimming with hearty local food, warm drinks and traditional Christmas souvenirs, surrounding a giant lit Christmas tree – sometimes dusted with snow. The main market in the city’s Old Town, Rynek Główny, the market square around the Renaissance Cloth Hall isn’t Europe’s largest Christmas Market but it still ticks every festive market ticklist. Cloth Hall itself is an extension of the main market with its long parade of stalls of traditional Christmas specialities, from wooden toys to handmade chocolates. For a more boutique experience, the smaller market to the north of the Old Town, outside the Galeria Krakowska shopping mall is an option with an ice rink, and on plac Wolnica in Kazimerz offers a relaxed setting. To make the most of the array of Polish cuisines on offer at this time of year, a guided food tour is a recommended way to taste your way around the city and gain some insider tips.
