Tucked away on Place de l’Église, in the charming village of Lamothe-Montravel, this beautifully renovated family gîte offers a wonderfully relaxing base at the gateway to the Dordogne.
With views towards the river, generous living spaces and many of southwest France’s most captivating destinations within easy reach, it is an inviting retreat for families, couples and friends.
I stayed here from 26 to 29 August 2026, and from the moment I arrived, the house felt welcoming. It combines the character and tranquillity of village life as one is quite literally on the village square, with the comfort and convenience expected from a thoughtfully equipped and beautiful modern holiday home.
A Comfortable Home Designed for Relaxation.
Guests enjoy exclusive use of the entire house, making it easy to settle in and treat the property as a genuine home away from home.
At its heart is a spacious living room that opens directly onto a semi-covered terrace, an ideal setting for a leisurely breakfast, an afternoon drink, or a peaceful evening barbecue. Hammocks add to the relaxed holiday atmosphere, and the layout gives everyone enough room to enjoy some peace and privacy. 
Or maybe you want to cool down in the recently installed hot tub after a day of exploring one of the most beautiful areas of France.
The superbly well-equipped kitchen makes self-catering simple, whether you are preparing a quick family meal or cooking with fresh produce discovered at a nearby market.
Oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine and everything else in between. A long kitchen table enables those lazy cooking events with wine and chatter. And two supermarkets, a leisurely 10 minutes’ drive away, make life simple. A wonderful Boulangerie and Pâtissier is just a 5-minute walk away.
Downstairs also boasts a WC and walk-in shower.
Upstairs, a separate relaxation area creates another quiet corner to read, chat, or unwind.
The house also offers three attractive bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and a garage where bicycles, outdoor equipment and travel gear can be stored securely.
Bed linen and towels are supplied, removing one more task from the holiday checklist.

Reversible air conditioning keeps the house comfortable in warmer weather, and mosquito nets are fitted to all bedroom windows, allowing fresh air to circulate at night.
Experience Life in a Friendly French Village
Lamothe-Montravel may be peaceful, but it is far from sleepy. In summer, the village comes alive with festivals, community events, and activities on the water, offering visitors a chance to experience an authentic corner of French life.
Everyday essentials are conveniently close. The bakery, butcher, grocery shop, tearoom, and tobacconist are all within walking distance, so mornings can begin with fresh bread and pastries without needing to get into the car.
Local food is another pleasure. A sustainable market gardener is only a few minutes away, alongside a local milk and cheese producer and a selection of restaurants. It is easy to fill the kitchen with regional ingredients—or let someone else do the cooking while you enjoy a relaxed meal nearby.
The railway station is approximately a ten-minute walk from the house, adding a useful transport option for guests who want to explore without driving everywhere.
Vineyards, History and Beautiful Countryside
One of the gîte’s greatest attractions is its location. It sits within easy reach of vineyards, historic landmarks, family attractions and picturesque countryside, making it an excellent base for discovering both the Dordogne and the neighbouring wine country.
The internationally renowned vineyards of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol are around 15 minutes away.
Here, visitors can wander through postcard-perfect wine villages, admire rolling rows of vines and discover the traditions behind some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated wines.
Several fascinating cultural sites are less than ten minutes from the house. These include the Battle of Castillon experience, the Château de Montaigne and the remains of the Gallo-Roman villa at Montcaret.
Together, they provide a rich introduction to the area’s history, from the ancient world to the closing chapter of the Hundred Years’ War and the life of one of France’s most influential philosophers.
The surrounding Pays Foyen and Pays de Bergerac are filled with characteristic villages and scenic routes that invite exploration on foot or by bicycle.
Whether you prefer a gentle riverside outing, a country ride or an unhurried drive through vineyards and villages, there is always another beautiful corner to discover.
Family-Friendly Days Out
Families are well catered for, too. Lake Gurson offers outdoor recreation and an enjoyable change of pace on warm days, while the traditional gabarres of Bergerac provide a memorable way to experience the River Dordogne.
These flat-bottomed boats recall the region’s historic river trade and offer visitors a different perspective on the landscape.
With water activities, historic attractions, village adventures and open countryside all close by, it is easy to plan days that appeal to both adults and children.
My Stay: An Easy Five Stars
My experience at the Lamothe-Montravel gîte was exceptional. The accommodation was comfortable, beautifully presented and clearly prepared with great attention to detail.
It offered exactly what I wanted: a peaceful place to relax, enough space to feel completely at home and a superb location for exploring the surrounding region.
Our host, Amélie, was friendly, helpful and attentive, making everything easy and enjoyable from arrival to departure. Nothing was too much bother to ask, and she made us feel extremely welcome.
The standard of hospitality was excellent, and the entire stay went smoothly.
This is the kind of holiday home that allows you to experience France at a gentler pace: collecting fresh bread from the village, spending the day among vineyards or historic sites, and returning to relax on the terrace as the evening settles in.
The Verdict
For travellers seeking a comfortable, memorable stay near the Dordogne, this Lamothe-Montravel gîte is a wonderful choice. It combines a peaceful village setting, spacious accommodation, thoughtful amenities and easy access to some of southwest France’s greatest attractions.
I would happily return and recommend it without hesitation. A thoroughly enjoyable stay—and an easy five stars.

A gîte is a French term for a self-catering holiday property. It is usually a furnished house, cottage, farmhouse or apartment rented to visitors for short stays. Traditionally, gîtes are found in rural areas or villages, although they can exist almost anywhere in France.
Airbnb, by contrast, is an online booking platform—not a type of accommodation.
The main difference
- Gîte describes the property:
It tells you that the accommodation is generally a furnished, self-catering holiday rental in France. - Airbnb describes the booking service: a website and app through which hosts advertise many kinds of accommodation, including gîtes, apartments, private rooms, villas, and unusual stays.
- A gîte can be listed on Airbnb: The same property might also appear on Booking.com, Vrbo, a local tourism website or the owner’s own website.
- A gîte can be booked directly: Some owners take reservations themselves, meaning the property is still a gîte even when Airbnb is not involved.
