London continues to reinvent itself as a premier destination where historic charm meets modern innovation. During a recent tour, one of our intrepid reporters experienced a carefully curated selection of attractions that showcase the city’s dynamic evolution.

Most of these attractions are off the typical tourist radar but provide a great visitor experience. My two-day London break started with a flight into London City Airport and from there it was a short 15 minutes to “The Good Hotel” London.

The Good Hotel London.

London’s Royal Victoria Dock hosts an architectural marvel that’s making waves in the hospitality industry – quite literally. The Good Hotel, a floating establishment that sailed from Amsterdam to London in 2016, has transformed into one of the capital’s most innovative social enterprise success stories.

The Good Hotel London.

This former floating prison reimagined as a premium 148-room hotel, operates on a groundbreaking business model that puts social impact at its core. Unlike traditional hotels, The Good Hotel combines nonprofit and for-profit elements to create what founder Marten Dresen calls “premium hospitality with a cause.”

The industrial-chic interior, featuring custom-made furniture from sustainable materials and local artwork, reflects the hotel’s commitment to conscious luxury. Panoramic views of London’s skyline and the Thames create an unexpected oasis in this historic dockland area.

Guest reviews consistently praise not only the hotel’s unique concept but also its high service standards.

The Good Hotel’s success has sparked interest from other cities worldwide, with plans for expansion already in discussion. The project demonstrates how social enterprises can thrive in the luxury hospitality sector without compromising quality or comfort.

The Good Hotel London.

Room rates start from £69 per night, with all profits reinvested into training programs and local community initiatives. The hotel also houses a restaurant serving locally sourced cuisine and a rooftop terrace that has become a popular spot for both tourists and locals.

As the hospitality industry grapples with post-pandemic recovery and increasing demands for sustainable, socially responsible tourism, The Good Hotel stands as a blueprint for the future of conscious hospitality.

"London Unleashed: A Journey Through Innovation, Culture, and Entertainment" 6After an exhilarating trip over the Thames, our reporter decided to be wicked and tried to defy gravity inside London’s Ultimate Indoor Skydiving Experience at iFLY.

iFLY London offers an exhilarating taste of skydiving in a safe, controlled environment, making the seemingly impossible accessible to almost everyone. The centrepiece of this cutting-edge facility is a state-of-the-art vertical wind tunnel, generating winds up to 165mph that create a wall of air strong enough to support human flight. This engineering marvel uses four powerful fans to circulate air through the flight chamber, creating a seamless column of air that allows participants to float as if they were 12,000 feet above the Earth.

“What sets iFLY apart is that it’s not just a simulation – it’s real flying,” explains one of the facility’s professional instructors. “The physics and sensations are identical to actual skydiving, just without the plane or parachute.”

The experience begins with a comprehensive training session where expert instructors break down body-flight fundamentals. Participants learn the crucial hand signals used for communication in the wind tunnel and master the basic body position that enables stable flight. The attention to safety is meticulous, with each flyer equipped with a specially designed flight suit, helmet, goggles, and earplugs.

Then comes the moment of truth. As you lean forward into the wind tunnel, supported by your instructor, the sensation is magical. The powerful updraft catches your body, and suddenly, you’re floating, flying, and experiencing the pure freedom of human flight.

Each session typically includes two one-minute flights – equivalent to about three actual skydives in terms of freefall time.

Practical Information:

  • Location: The O2, Peninsula Square, London
  • Session Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours total
  • Flight Time: Two one-minute flights per person
  • Age Restrictions: Suitable for ages 3+
  • Weight Limit: Maximum 18 stone (114kg)
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair-accessible facility
  • Booking: Reservation recommended

Beyond the adrenaline rush, iFLY is a unique team-building venue, a distinctive date night option, and an unforgettable family activity. The facility includes viewing areas where friends and family can watch and take photos, making it as entertaining for spectators as it is for participants.

Giraffes, elephants, zebras, and birds fill the stage, creating a sense of awe and wonder that sets the tone for the entire performance. The attention to detail in the design is extraordinary, from the vibrant African landscapes to the intricate animal movements, all of which feel both magical and authentic.

The Lion King

The story of THE LION KING leaps into life using spectacular masks, puppets and costumes to tell the story of Simba’s epic adventures as he struggles with the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.

Julie Taymor’s internationally celebrated stage adaptation of THE LION KING opened on Broadway in 1997 and 25 global productions in nine different languages have been created since then (English, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese). THE LION KING is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.

Since its UK premiere in 1999, THE LION KING London has entertained over 20 million theatregoers and is the sixth longest-running West End musical.

Julie Taymor, one of the world’s most innovative directors, brought a vast array of disciplines to THE LION KING, including extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions and exploring classic myths through ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement. The Lion King was the first musical Taymor directed in the commercial theatre and she made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award® for Best Director of a Musical.

The Broadway show’s full creative team, which won five Tony Awards® for its work on THE LION KING, reunited in 1999 to recreate the show in London. Julie Taymor and Michael Curry created hundreds of masks and puppets.

The scenic design was created by British designer Richard Hudson, and the lighting was created by Donald Holder. Costume design is by Julie Taymor and choreography is by Garth Fagan. The book was adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated feature and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay.

The original score from the animated film was expanded for the stage and now features 15 musical numbers.  As well as writing completely new songs, South African composer Lebo M created an evocative blend of African rhythms and chorales, with additional material by Julie Taymor and Mark Mancina.

Elton John and Tim Rice have added three new numbers to the five that they wrote for the award-winning score of the animated film. The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, including the Academy Award®-winning Can You Feel The Love Tonight and the haunting Shadowland.
